August 2001: The horrible month

When the trial court convicted Hari Singh on, the judge wrote in his verdict that, “It was emphasized that the appellant did not behave violently, nor was any arm or explosive or weapon recovered from him. Likewise, the 31-page letter given to the commander (by him) also revealed his concern for the passengers and a great deal of anxiety for their well-being.”, it could be very well ascertained from the judgment too, that he did not have any intention of personal gains, and all that he did was just to serve the cause of nation’s interest. Even after having established themselves that he did not attempt any crime which could be awarded with punitive action, a mocked crime was treated as actual and ultimately Hari Singh was sent behind the bars for his highly affectionate decision to safeguard the future of his country.

Hari Singh is my father and he has done nothing which could ruin our future like that; we are forced to live with uncertainty about tomorrows to come. August 2001 was the month we celebrated our country’s independence in a new century, but the ghosts of old and outdated laws didn’t allow my family to breathe easy and live free in the fresh breeze of independence.

It seems like my family is still a slave, as my father fought for the welfare of other citizens whose only relation with my father was through motherland, he was trapped amidst the definitions of crime as per our country’s penal code which still has impressions of gone by colonial era. The laws were initially manifested to prevent the asylum to natives of India, as the British gave good attention to every single instance of awarding Justice to them, but since the stonehearted rulers left, the penal code has just seen a handful of amendments and another of reviews. It becomes very unfortunate to mention that India is being run by British law , which still had its roots planted in hatred & discrimination.

21 years have passed since that incident took place which changed the course of our lives, it seems the world is marching ahead and we are being pushed back in time by every passing day, I on behalf of my family request you all those with hearts for the motherland. Please stand up for my father, he has lived for his nation always, please let him live for his family too, help me to get his life sentence commuted, help him & ensure Justice with his family. Justice for Hari Singh.
